Big News! Big 7 foot 1 inch, 21 and a half stone news! One of the worst video games in history is coming back with a crowdfunded remake. The eponymous Shaq Fu returns in the form of Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn this spring.
Originally a Super Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive release, 1995’s Shaq Fu lets you play as real-world basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal as he fights magic monsters in one on one fist fights using only his prowess of “Shaquido”. The egocentric vanity project was hated when it came out for its terrible controls and ludicrous premise. Even the 12 original characters with up to 6 special moves each couldn’t save it.
Now Saber Interactive is joining forces with independent publisher Wired Productions to try and restore Shaq’s image in the gaming community 23 years later. The new Shaq Fu leaves its mortal combat style fighting mimicking another Megadrive fan favourite, Streets of Rage. Billed as an action-packed beat ‘em up, players take on the role of the unstoppable Shaquille O’Neal in this 3D side-scroller as he fights his way through the hordes of hell and Hollywood. Players can expect devastating combos, outlandish celebrity bosses and an array of weapons, including katanas, shuriken and baseball bats.
The artistry is very reminiscent of Street Fighter 4 in its cartoonish cell shaded style. Shaq himself is a super buffed version. Nothing like the real-life middle-aged man that retired from professional sport over 5 years ago. A hint that this game might not take itself so seriously.
With the support of the crowdfunding community, the producers are keen to get the game out soon. Saber CEO Matt Karch says “We know diehard fans have been waiting eagerly to experience the hard-hitting action of this new take on Shaq Fu, and we’re excited to team up with Wired Productions to get the game physically into the hands of players this spring,”.
Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn will launch globally this spring for the PlayStation®4, Xbox One, Windows PC and Nintendo Switch™.
